The Automated Material Handling Systems Market is witnessing a significant transformation with the emergence of automated storage & retrieval systems (ASRS). In today's highly competitive business landscape, efficient material handling is crucial for organizations across industries. An ASRS automates the storage and retrieval of goods, materials, or inventory within a facility. These systems utilize a combination of hardware, software, and control systems to efficiently manage and optimize storage operations. Automated storage and retrieval systems are widely used in industries such as e-commerce, retail, manufacturing, and logistics, where efficient and accurate inventory management and order fulfillment are critical to success. An ASRS maximizes vertical space utilization, allowing for high-density storage and efficient use of available floor area. Also, it enables quick and accurate retrieval of items, reducing order processing time and improving overall order fulfillment speed.
Automated storage and retrieval systems are used for automated deposition and retrieval of loads to and from different locations. There are different types of ASRS, including unit load, mini-load (that handle lighter loads), vertical lift modules, shuttles for automated handling of cartons and trays, horizontal and vertical carousels, and cube-based storage, which uses robotics technology to store and retrieve data. Companies are implementing AS/RS to optimize space utilization and reduce energy consumption in material handling operations.
Some of the developments in ASRS are as follows:
- In June 2023, Hy-Tek LLC (U.S.) partnered with HAI ROBOTICS Co., Ltd. (China) to deploy automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) solutions to help reduce customer storage footprints, increase workflow efficiency, maximize order picking accuracy, and improve daily order fulfillment rates.
- In November 2021, Honeywell International Inc. (U.S.) announced a new automated storage and retrieval system to help warehouses, distribution centers, and manufacturing sites receive, process, and fill orders faster and more accurately while potentially reducing their footprint.
- In 2020, Swisslog Holding AG (Switzerland) installed a fully automated retrieval solution for Mai Dubai (Dubai).
All such developments and benefits offered along with the rising demand for products across e-commerce and automotive industries, increasing order velocity and volumes, the growing need for faster, more accurate, and efficient order fulfillment in the retail sector, and industries’ increasing investments in ASRS in developing countries are further supporting the growth of the AMHS market in the coming years.
